Welcome from the Head of
Sixth Form.

There can be no doubt that HeadG Sixth Form is a vibrant and challenging environment which demands commitment and enthusiasm towards clear goals to give confidence in the ever changing landscape of the wider world. We are focused on the preparation of leaders and the soft skills that are so vital to Higher Education and the flexibility demanded in the world of work. Academically students are taught in small groups with a focus on wider reading and skill development alongside the content and thirst for knowledge that is so important for success at this level. All students undertake a ‘Pre A’ course when they first join Sixth Form to embed this attitude towards their studies and there is an ongoing programme of Learning Character Education to hone the skills required to make the most of the online classroom, teachers and study time. This programme fits with the six pillars of HeadG Leadership; Ambition, Courage, Empathy, Integrity, Responsibility and Judgement. Sixth Form provides the students with countless opportunities to manifest these qualities and investigate the importance of these words. HeadG Sixth Form is about far more than grades, they drive the core of what we do and we guide every student to achieve their goals and exceed their expectations. HeadG Sixth Form is a busy place and a place where everyone understands the importance of community and excellence in all aspects of the learning process. We are making leaders and our students are in an environment and a programme where they can prove it.

Monitoring and Reporting
.

Monitoring and tracking progress is acutely focused in the Sixth Form due to the relatively short time taken to compete A Level programmes. The rigorous processes embedded in the Senior School seamlessly continue through to the Sixth Form with departments charting progress and setting target grades. In the Lower Sixth, students attend two online Progress Review Evenings (PRE), with the second taking place following internal examinations. Open dialogue is encouraged and students are expected to take ownership of their progress and responsibility for using the feedback provided to achieve their desired academic outcomes. In addition to PRE, parents will also receive written reports that provide information relating to student attainment as well as their attitude to learning. Upper Sixth students sit mock examinations in January and this is followed by a final PRE in February that focuses on final preparations for the exam season.

Learning
Development
.

As students enter the Sixth Form the skills required for the advanced study of subjects and preparation for life beyond school change. Throughout their time in the Senior School, pupils undertake a bespoke ‘Learning Skills’ programme that provides the foundation for continued development in the Sixth Form.

Exam
preparation is a key part of a student’s development and it is recognised that individuals require differing levels of support to ensure their academic endeavours are reflected in examination results.

The Learning Development department work closely with students to provide support ranging from general study skills to 1:1 lessons with expert teachers. The focus remains on students taking ownership of their learning so that they leave school with awareness of how they can get the best out of their studies beyond A Levels.

Mindset for Learning

The expectations and style of learning at A Level is markedly different to that of GCSE’s. Students are expected to undertake independent study and gain the ability to put what they learn into context, showing a deep understanding of their subject matter. As soon as students join the Sixth Form they start a tailored Mindset for Learning Programme specifically designed to tackle this potential pitfall and to ensure that students remain on a positive progress trajectory.
